Take One Step at a Time.
It is simpler than it may seem.
Please take the time to become wise about our use of wireless transmitting devices (WTDs) such as smart phones, home cordless phones, tablets, laptops, gaming devices, and desktop computers. Be informed on these Ten Steps To Safe Technology so you can make wiser choices in technology use.
1. Distance Is Your Friend
One basic, very important concept is “Distance Is Your Friend.” The amount of radiation absorbed into the human user decreases very rapidly with distance from whatever wireless device you may be using. Decrease your exposure by increasing your distance from emitting sources. For example, always keep cell phones and wireless laptops away from your body.
Become aware of the various emitting sources in your surroundings so you can maximize distance from as many of them as possible. Keeping a distance is just the first step in reducing your risk. The next step is installing safe corded connections so you can eliminate these sources of radiation entirely.
2. Airplane Mode ON, And Wi-Fi OFF, And Bluetooth OFF
“Airplane mode”, also known as “flight mode,” is a setting on your wireless device that stops the microwave radiation emissions.
On every computer, laptop, tablet, or WTD, there is a function key that turns OFF the Wi-Fi transmitter. There is also a function key that turns OFF the Bluetooth transmissions.
Whenever you hand a child a technology device such as cell phone, tablet, or laptop, please set the Airplane mode to ON, and Wi-Fi to OFF, and Bluetooth to OFF.
3. Prefer Non-Wireless Connections
For home phones (landline), internet, printer, speakers, and entertainment gear, connect by cord or cable with all wireless features off.
Wi-Fi Internet Connections at Home: As an easy first step, power off the Wi-Fi router at bedtime. Then ask your internet provider how to connect with plug-in cords and turn off the antennae feature of the modem or router. Many companies allow you to manage the wireless settings online and you can simply turn it off via the internet. Sometimes a swap to a non-wireless modem is necessary.
Trade in your home cordless phones for corded phones. Most cordless phone base stations constantly emit high levels of microwave radiation regardless whether or not any connected handset is in use. The cordless phone handsets also emit microwave radiation. Corded landlines have no wireless radiation emissions and therefore this simple step can substantially reduce your daily microwave radiation exposures.
Wire Up Game Stations and Controllers: Choose gaming devices that have the option to connect the hand controllers with a cord.
Hardwire Accessories (Printer, Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, etc.): Wi-Fi printers are a hidden source of constant Wi-Fi emissions, just like a Wi-Fi router or cordless phone base. The safest choice is a hardwired non-wireless printer. Some wireless printers allow the wireless antennae to be turned off via an internal network setting, so contact the manufacturer for directions. For some machines, the “OFF” setting is retained in memory, but for some machines you must reset to “OFF” each time you power on. Also, whether or not the “OFF” setting is retained, during each powering on start-up procedure some machines do self-diagnostics that include checking the ability to emit a very strong Wi-Fi signal, so it is wise to distance yourself from the device during its start-up procedures. A mouse with a cord has no wireless radiation emissions (there is no setting to change).
Remember: If a user or tracking device is wireless, it has wireless radiation emissions.
4. Turn It Off When Not In Use
Wireless enabled devices are always transmitting radiation even when you are not surfing the internet or using the device to talk or message. The only way to stop these emissions is to set the wireless antennas to OFF.
Why? Wi-Fi devices continuously check in with their main network (cell tower or Wi-Fi router) to be sure a connection exists. This radiation activity is called a digital handshake. For example, a Wi-Fi router emits a beacon signal at regular intervals to signal the available network (whether or not any person or machine is using the network). Similarly, a Wi-Fi enabled tablet or other personal use device will also signal at regular intervals hunting for a network (whether or not a person is using that connection). Those signals are all radiation emissions.
You can easily decrease your family’s firsthand and secondhand radiation exposure by turning off wireless networks and devices whenever you are not actively using them, such as at night while you sleep.
Turning off wireless devices (and their related gear)—for example, gaming, entertainment, and computer systems—when not in use also saves significant energy and makes all around good sense.
Note: Turning Wi-Fi off when not in use only eliminates wireless exposures while the WiFi is OFF but still allows you to be exposed when the Wi-Fi is ON. Therefore you are still getting signifiant exposure when you turn the Wi-Fi ON. EHT considers this step a first step in reducing exposures and we recommend you takethe next step get the hardware to fully hardwire your home and office to eliminate exposures. There is no known safe level of exposure.
5. Power Off Wireless Devices When Driving
Power off wireless connectivity in vehicles. Mobile devices distract drivers even if hands-free. Cell phones and streaming tablets and laptops also emit higher power radiation during travel because the metal surroundings create radiation hotspots inside the driver and passenger areas of your vehicle. Plan ahead so that you do not need to use any cell phones or wirelessly enabled devices in the car. Going on a road trip and your children want to watch movies? Before you leave, download the movies onto the device so that during the trip wireless access is not necessary.
6. Practice Safer Phone Use
For adults who must use a mobile phone: use speaker phone or a plug-in earpiece, and when you are not using the phone be sure to power off or set the phone on Airplane/Flight mode and the Wi-Fi to OFF and the Bluetooth to OFF.

Rethink how you use cell phones when you are near children. For example, do not use a cell phone while an infant is on your lap, and do not carry your cell phone in your baby carrier.
7. Safeguard Your Sleep
Pew Research reported that 75% of children sleep every night with their cell phone beneath their pillow. Be aware that wireless radiation and light seriously impact our sleep so be sure to power off all screens and electronics well before bedtime.
Many newer TVs, gaming systems, and computers plugged into electricity or on battery power will have radiation emissions even if in power off mode, so it is best to remove them from the bedroom or completely disconnect them from their power source.
Need an alarm on your phone? You can set the phone to Airplane/Flight Mode ON and the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to OFF and still use the alarm feature.
Be sure to charge cell phones and tech devices outside the bedroom, because charger gear generates other types of electromagnetic fields that are also linked to health issues.
Locate screens in family areas—not in bedrooms.
8. Decrease The Power Of The Signal
If necessary to have Wi-Fi on, you can significantly reduce your exposure to that radiation by decreasing the signal strength.
Home Wi-Fi routers are often set to cover all areas within 100 meters with the radiation. This distance is usually not necessary in a home. At a minimum, contact your internet provider to turn down the signal strength on your router, and ask your neighbors to do the same. (The safest step is to get a wired modem.)
The fewer the bars on your cell phone or wireless enabled device, the higher the radiation it is outputting. So minimize your use when the signal is weak. Also, hold the phone far from your body when a call is being received because the phone often emits maximum radiation at that time.
9. Decrease Time And Length Of Wireless Device Use
The longer you connect wirelessly, the more radiation you absorb into your body. So keep your wireless phone calls and Wi-Fi use short—whenever possible. We all need internet access and good long phone calls, so be sure you have a landline corded phone and wired home computer to use for safe internet connections. No wireless radiation is emitted from ethernet cables. Minimize your time spent in Wi-Fi hotspots.
10. Read The Fine Print
All device manufacturers advise that each wireless device should be at some distance away from human bodies and brains. For example, printers, computers, and wireless routers instruct that the distance between the device and a human body must be at least 20 cm (about 8 inches).
Keeping these devices closer than the manufacturer’s designated distance can result in a violation of the federal government’s official radiation exposure limit. Exceeding these levels can result in your body absorbing thermal levels of microwave radiation. Such levels can heat your body and lead to sterility, burns, and brain damage. Before a phone, tablet, MP3 player, etc. is placed into a pocket or bra or tucked into clothing, set Airplane mode to ON and Wi-Fi to OFF and Bluetooth to OFF. Always also use those settings before devices are near a pregnant abdomen.

The World Health Organization;s (WHO) Interntional Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radiofequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMFS) as poossibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B)
The official classification of Group 2B puts wireless radiation int he same category as other substances already classified a "possibly carcinogenic to humans"....substances such as lead, styrene and the pesticide DDT.
1. All Cell Phones And Wireless Devices Emit Radiation.
Every wireless device is actually a two-way microwave radio that sends and receives a type of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation called radio frequency radiation RF – EMF. This machine-made radiation is millions of times higher than the natural electromagnetic fields (EMFs) our grandparents were exposed to.
2. Our Brains And Bodies Are Penetrated By This Radiation.
When we hold a cell phone against our head to talk, the radiation from the phone moves into our brain. Likewise, when we use a wireless laptop, the radiation penetrates into our abdominal region, chest area and brain.
3. Cell Phones And Wireless Devices Emit Radiation Constantly, Even When You Are Not Talking Or Using The Phone.
A powered on cell phone is always “checking in” and maintaining a connection to the nearest cell tower by sendsintense bursts of radiation several times per second. Likewise, a wireless-enabled laptop, tablet or other device is always “checking in” with the nearby router or a network base. These “check ins” are radiation emissions—happening several times per second, and whether or not a connection is successfully established.
4. Every Wireless Device Has Fine Print Instructions Buried In Its User Manual That Specify A Distance Between The Device And User That Should Not Be Surpassed.
For example, most cell phone manuals state the phone should be held at specified distance (often around 5/8th of an inch) from the body. If you look in the user manual for your DECT cordless home phone, wireless laptop or printer, it will state that the device should be at least 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) away from the body to prevent “exceeding FCC radiation exposure limits”. These instructions are in the user manuals because cell phones and wireless devices are tested for user radiation exposures at those specific distances.
In other words, if you are using a laptop on your lap, you are exposing yourself to untested radiation emissions that could exceed the radiation levels our government regulations presently allow. When you use a device closer than the manufacturer’s distance instructions, you risk exposing yourself to radiation levels that our federal government understands can cause sterility, brain damage and tissue damage. 5. These Fine Print Instructions DO NOT Protect You From All Health Effects.
The instructions buried in your manual are not safe enough. Even if you follow these instructions, you risk your health. Note: radiation exposure at the specified distances is much higher than zero. Accumulating research now shows a myriad of health effects occur at levels far far below (literally tens of thousands times lower than) government regulation limits. Wireless devices were not adequately tested before they came on the market.
6. Research Shows Low Levels Of This Radiation Impact The Brain And Reproductive System
Wireless radiation has been shown to change brain function even at levels hundreds of thousands of times below federal guidelines. In 2011, Dr. Volkow’s NIH research showed that the brain increased glucose metabolism when exposed to cell phone radiation. Dr. Suleyman Kaplan has published multiple research studies showing damaged brain development in the offspring of prenatally exposed test subjects. Significant research shows that wireless exposures decrease and damage sperm and that prenatal exposure can alter testis and ovarian development. These are just a few examples from a large body of accumulated science which shows effects from cell phone and wireless radiation.
7. Radiation Emitted By Cell Phones And Wireless Is Officially Linked To Cancer.
In 2011, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer first classified cell phone and wireless radiation as a “class 2 B Possible Human Carcinogen” based on these research studies that showed long-term users of cell phones had higher rates of brain cancer on the side of the head where they held the phone.
8.The Evidence Linking Wireless Radiation To Cancer Has Significantly Increased Since 2011.
In 2016, a major US government study found cell phone radiation caused increased cancers (brain and heart nerve) in rats exposed at low levels for two years. The results were stunning because the cancers the rats developed are the same type humans are developing after long term cell phone use.
Furthermore, since 2011, new research studies have been published linking wireless radiation to cancer. CERENAT (a case control national study in France) again showed a statistically significant association between glioma (brain cancer) and long-erm cell phone use. Another study (which replicated previous study results) showed that RF acted as a tumor promoter. The study details in its conclusion how, “Numbers of tumors of the lungs and livers in exposed animals were significantly higher than in sham-exposed controls. In addition, lymphomas were also found to be significantly elevated by exposure.”
In light of this published science, several World Health Organization experts are stating that the evidence has now substantially increased. Dr. Anthony B. Miller has testified as to the increased evidence, and he and colleagues have written several published papers detailing their opinion. Dr. Hardell states that wireless “should be regarded as human carcinogen requiring urgent revision of current exposure guidelines.”
9. Solutions Exist: Hundreds Of Scientists Worldwide Recommend Taking Precautions To Reduce Exposures To Wireless Devices Because Of The Serious Risk These Devices Pose To Public Health
In 2015, over 200 scientists and medical doctors signed onto a formal Appeal to the United Nations and the World Health Organization, calling on them to take immediate action on this issue. In 2014, a group of U.S. physicians, including the Chief of Obstetrics at Yale Medicine, helped launch The BabySafe Project, issuing specific recommendations to pregnant women on how to decrease wireless exposures in order to decrease risks to babies’ brain development. We do not have to give up our technology but we can make smarter choices about the way we use it. Every person can easily decrease exposure to this radiation by making simple changes every day.
10. Government Regulations Are Outdated And Antiquated.
In the United States, the last review for radio frequency limits was in 1996, and the reality is that these are limits are based on research from the 1980s. Many countries are using guidelines developed by the IEEE or ICNIRP—guidelines that have remained unchanged for decades. Those guidelines do not consider the more current science showing harm.
Regulations are antiquated because they have not kept pace with the manner in which consumers use devices—usage has changed considerably since 1996. For example, the regulations only consider one radiating device at a time and do not account for a residence, classroom, or workplace, healthcare, retail, recreational and other venues filled with multiple devices. The regulations do not consider that people carry their cell phones tightly in a front pocket of jeans or in a bra. They do not consider that laptops would be placed on laps by schoolchildren in the classroom. Regulations did not consider research that looked at long-term exposures to children or medically compromised individuals. Guidelines were set by only considering the impact to a full-grown man.
Final Bonus Fact: No Safe Level Of This Radiation Has Been Identified.
Scientific studies have not been done to develop a “safe level” of exposure. The latest science clearly shows that biological effects could occur at non-thermal (non-heating) levels. Science also shows that children and the developing pregnancy are far more vulnerable to these damaging effects. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not do research necessary to define a safe level that the public can be exposed to without harmful effects.
In a 2015 study (replicating prior scientific findings linking RF to cancer promotion), the researchers state, “Since many of the tumor-promoting effects in our study were seen at low to moderate exposure levels (0.04 and 0.4 W/kg SAR), thus well below exposure limits for the users of mobile phones, further studies are warranted to investigate the underlying mechanisms.” and “We hypothesize that these tumor-promoting effects may be caused by metabolic changes due to exposure. Our findings may help to understand the repeatedly reported increased incidences of brain tumors in heavy users of mobile phones.”
No medical organization has determined a “safe level” of this radiation for long-term exposure to children.

Improve Your Health, And Make The World A Safer Place

At a recent conference I was on a panel with the imposing title, “Plan B: 4.0 Mobilizing To Save Civilization, The Climate Change, Resource Depletion and Environmental Solution”. At the end, the moderator asked the following fabulous question:
We scientists tend to be far better at painting dystopian pictures of the future than offering solutions to guide individual action. But we must. This is my response. Please feel free to suggest additions and deletions.
1. Drive less: No invention has done more to destroy the planet than the car. From air pollution to global warming to ruptured communities to wars for oil, many of the world’s most pressing problems can be traced directly to its excessive use. Like any brilliant invention, the gas powered vehicle has an important role to play in our world, but the current patterns of use are enormously destructive and must change.
2. Walk more: This is more than just the flipside of driving less. Walking does more than just use less gas. It is exercise, meditation, time outside, and an activity that fosters community. We need to reinvent our oppressively auto-centric, walker hostile sprawl and demand planning and zoning that encourages this.
3. Eat less or no meat: Our modern agricultural system requires the equivalent of 10 calories of energy to produce one calorie of food energy. Growing genetically engineered, herbicide resistant corn to feed abused animals, so that we can eat Big Macs and increase our risk of heart disease and colon cancer is just a bad system all around. Eat beans. They’re good for your heart. And your planet.
4. Eat organic: We don’t understand the combined effect of the soup of pesticides found in conventional foods. We do know that they are probably not good for the environment. In fact, they may be responsible for a massive die off of the bees that keep the whole system working. Organic agriculture is healthier for the planet and probably healthier for you.
5. Slow down: We live at light speed. Find ways to slow down from time to time. In particular, spend time in nature. We are small. Slowing down allows you to live and takes less energy.
6. Question technology: We love our iToys and with good reason. They are miraculous expressions of human ingenuity. But they come at us and, especially, at our children too fast. We need to understand the many ways they can effect our physical, mental, and social health. Ask the questions that no one else wants to ask.
7. Reimagine the future: Sustainability is inevitable. It is a simple law of physics. We do have some control over what it will look like and how we get there. If we stay on our current course, sustainability will be ugly and getting there will be cataclysmic. It will take all of our collective wisdom to make anything approaching a soft transition. The first step is reimagining the future. Do it yourself and demand your political leaders do it too.
8. Study science: Powerful financial interests have no qualms about manipulating science to further profits. Our best weapon is wisdom and understanding.
9. Demand basic scientific understanding of your political leaders, your schools, and, most of all, yourself.
10. Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle: This old adage was never more true. Waste is the enemy.
Raise wise children and grandchildren: The wise and wonderful Wendell Berry once wrote “[an exceptional man] knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children.” The world we trash is our children’s. Remember them in every action. To love your children is to teach them well and prepare them for ownership.
We CAN be the change. One person at a time CAN change this world.
